In Brazilian Portuguese, 'cenas' is used similarly to English, both in formal theatrical contexts and colloquially. In Portugal, the word has an additional informal meaning referring to 'things' or 'situations' ('que cenas!' = 'what things/situations!'). In both cultures, 'fazer cena' (to make a scene) is a common expression for public displays of emotion.
